John Callanan - Class of 2021
The Possibilities Are Endless
John credits his successes to the opportunities he received at The American Academy Program at American Heritage Schools
John Callanan, a Class of 2021 senior, hasn’t looked back since starting The American Academy Program at American Heritage Schools in 7th grade. John has mild learning differences and the reputation for academics, extracurricular activities, and athletic opportunities was a huge draw for him and his family, and it turned out to be the best decision they ever made.
John credits his success to the faculty and staff who always offer their support and direction regardless of the situation: “My biggest supporters are my guidance counselors, Mr. Basta and Mrs. Malloy. Both have been tremendous in helping me achieve everything I have set out to do.” When asked if there was a teacher who stood out from the others, John said, “Mr. Pointer. He was always willing to stay after school or meet me in the morning when I needed an extra explanation on an assignment. He even had last minute study sessions before an exam.”
John took full advantage of the offered programs and the extensive list proves it. He has been in the Pre-Law Society for three years holding three officer positions and competed in a Mock Trial seminar at Harvard. He co-founded a club called We Dine Together with the goal of curing lunchtime loneliness. He is also an athlete participating in varsity lacrosse, track and field, and cheerleading. John’s only regret is not joining the cheerleading team earlier, “I would have joined cheerleading my freshman year if I had known how much I would enjoy it.” When asked if there was anything else he wanted to share, John had this to say: “I’m also an Eagle Scout, a Boys State Delegate, a Congressional Nominee to the Air Force Academy, a Presidential Community Service Award recipient, a Youth Leadership Broward Graduate, and currently in the process of becoming a self-published author. The possibilities are endless at The American Academy Program at American Heritage Schools. This school is a great school to be a part of and a better school to be an alumni of.” John will begin the next chapter of his life as a student at Santa Fe College and looks forward to transferring the study skills and habits he learned while at American Academy when he starts his freshman year in the fall.
