Our teachers use a multi-sensory approach to learning that includes the most current educational research and resources to be effective to each individual student. Students receive instruction in a variety of ways. At American Academy, ESE certified teachers have the knowledge and experience with with various learning disabilities, and ability to modify curriculum and instruction based on the student’s academic needs and summative assessments. The class size is 12 students, one certified teacher, and one full-time teacher assistant, for grades K-5.

Students (K-5) at American Academy will also receive a personalized reading instruction plan designed and taught by Master level or higher Reading Specialist. Our experienced Reading Specialists are highly skilled and well trained in teaching students struggling with phonemic awareness and learning comprehension. All students are formally assessed each quarter to identify progress in targeted areas.

Students (6-12) at American Academy continue to gain reading instruction within each academic subject as well as through their Literature in the Arts classes. Students in the Literature in the Arts class read 4 to 5 novels a semester in literature circles. An emphasis is placed on reading for knowledge and pleasure. Reading instruction and strategies are prevalent throughout the class to assist in developing critical thinking.

The Reading Specialist and classroom teacher work together to support the students’ growth and remediation of struggles on a regular basis. Both the classroom teacher and reading specialist are certified in Exceptional Student Education (ESE).
